Medicare Wheelchairs

Medicare insurance coverage for scooters and electric wheelchairs

If you are finding it hard to get around lately, then you may be able to get your hands on a scooter or electric wheelchair using Medicare insurance coverage. You won’t believe the difference that an electric wheelchair can make to your life and how easier you will be able to get around. From May 2005 members are able to cover the part payment or entire cost of an electric wheelchair through Medicare.

The first step is to prove that you are eligible for an electric wheelchair showing that your trouble with mobility is affecting your daily life. You can do this by providing evidence that you’re having trouble with feeding, having baths, using the toilet and getting dressed etc all because of your problems with mobility.

You will have to provide the evidence to prove that an electric wheelchair is the only way for you to carry on your life, and that a cane or a walker will be inappropriate or unsuitable for you. Also you will be required so show why a normal manual wheelchair will not solve your mobility issues. Medicare will also require proof that an electric scooter would not improve the quality of your life. For an electric wheelchair you will have to demonstrate that you have the mental and physical capabilities to be able to use the electric wheelchair. You will also have to show enthusiasm to have the electric wheelchair and an interest in learning how to use one safely.

You will also have to demonstrate that you can get in and out of the electric wheelchair safely, as well as proving that you have the necessary strength in your upper body and balance to be able to operate the electric wheelchair safely.

One condition Medicare will ask is that in the last five years you have not put an insurance claim in for a previously purchased electric wheelchair.

Before processing your application for an electric wheelchair you will have to have a mobility assessment in person from a registered physician. Only a registered physician can confirm that you are able to fulfil the needs above. Medicare will generally insist that the registered physician is an orthopaedic surgeon, rheumatologist, certified neurologist or an expert in rehabilitation medicine. Up to 80% of the final price of the wheelchair will be covered by Medicare. Extra insurance policies normally pay the remainder of the fees.

Medicare will resolve electric wheelchair claims within 30 days from acceptance of the claim. It is suggested that you request a pre approval before buying the electric wheelchair. This way you know that Medicare will reimburse your costs.

Medicare has permitted an increasing amount of claims for electric wheelchairs over the previous decade. Research has revealed that these authorisations have produced overall savings for Medicare. People who have ample mobility aids have a significantly lower chance of breaking a hip or any other associated problems.
