When does Medicare Cover Diabetes Screenings?

Diabetes is a serious condition that requires a lot of focus to be able to live a normal life and take good care of one’s self.  Part of the struggle that diabetes sufferers must deal with is the financial strain that the tools to keep up with diabetes will put on them.  The needles and check-up kits are not cheap and are necessary to be able to maintain normality with the condition.

If you have Medicare and need help to determine if you are at risk for diabetes you can get tested if you answer yes to two or more of the following questions.

Are you age 65 or older?

Are you overweight?

Do you have a family history of diabetes (parents, siblings)?

Do you have a history of gestational diabetes (diabetes during pregnancy), or did you deliver a baby weighing more than 9 pounds?

Based on the results of these tests, you may be eligible for up to two diabetes screenings every year. There will be noo cost for the test, but you generally have to pay 20% of the Medicare-approved amount for the doctor’s visit.  The cost of the visit would be a small price to pay to be able to handle the condition that could change your life as you know it.
